The ‘nicest judge in the world’ has passed away, and people everywhere are mourning.

But we might never have known Frank Caprio at all if it weren’t for his wife, Joyce.

Judge Frank Caprio, beloved for his heartwarming and viral courtroom moments, has passed away at 88. The former Providence, Rhode Island, judge died ”peacefully” after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.”

Caprio, who grew up in the Italian-American neighborhood of Federal Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, was the second of three sons born to Antonio Caprio, an immigrant from Teano, Italy, and Filomena Caprio, whose family had come from Naples. His father worked as a fruit peddler and milkman — a job that would profoundly shape Caprio’s philosophy and decisions later as a judge.

As a child, Caprio would wake at 4 a.m. to help his father on the milk truck before heading to school. He remembers how his father would continue deliveries even to families who couldn’t pay.

“My father never stopped delivering milk to anyone who had a child,” Caprio told the Associated Press in 2002. He continued, “He would take money out of his own pocket and tell the company, ’They made a payment’.”

“He was a kind, compassionate man. His influence has had a great impact on me.”

Rise to fame
Caprio attended Providence public schools while working as a dishwasher and shoe-shiner. He graduated from Central High School, where he won the state wrestling championship in 1953.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1958 and then began teaching American government at Hope High School in Providence. During this time, he attended night classes at Suffolk University School of Law in Boston, paving the way for a career in law.

Caprio’s rise to international fame came through his traffic court cases, which went viral on social media and racked up over 1.7 billion views. Known for his empathy and fairness, Caprio always took individual circumstances into account when making decisions.

But becoming a celebrity was far from guaranteed for Frank.

His younger brother, Joe, had been filming him for local access television for 25 years, but it was Caprio’s wife, Joyce, who suggested using the footage to showcase his courtroom work.

“I didn’t like the idea actually, but of course, when my wife makes a suggestion, I usually don’t win that battle,” Caprio told Rhode Island Monthly.

“I agreed we would try it and see if it was something that worked. And there was an overwhelmingly positive response.”

The cases initially aired on WLNE-TV, with a run on ABC 6 at the turn of the century that increased his local popularity. But it was the posting of videos to platforms like Facebook and YouTube by Sociable’s John Methia, also the senior producer for Citylife Production, that brought Caprio global recognition.

In 2017, Caprio received what he called “the magic phone call” from Debmar-Mercury, leading to the national spotlight for Caught in Providence. The show premiered with 130 episodes airing twice daily on Fox, reaching 90 percent of the country, including major markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

“It’s surreal,” executive producer Joe Caprio said. “I am not a kid, so for this to happen at this stage of my life, God is good… I kept it real all these years. What is there is what we saw. It’s all about a good person helping people.”

Joyce and Frank married in 1965 and together raised five children: Frank T., David, Marissa, John, and Paul. Their family grew to include seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Beyond her role as a loving mother and grandmother, Joyce was Frank’s staunchest supporter throughout his career and public life.

She often joined him at events, but even as public figures, the couple kept their personal life remarkably private, living quietly away from the spotlight.

Joyce stayed with Frank throughout his final months as he faced pancreatic cancer. He occasionally shared moments from their life at home, and in one heartfelt social media post, he paid tribute to her unwavering support, calling her ”the incredible woman who gave me the greatest gift of all: our five amazing children!”

He continued, “Your strength, love, and endless devotion shape our family every single day.”

In March 2025, Frank once again celebrated his wife and their enduring marriage.

And just a few months before his tragic passing, Frank shared a heartfelt photo and message to his beloved wife—almost like a final farewell and tribute to the woman at the center of his life. One image can say what a thousand words cannot.
