My husband was late from work again

My husband was late from work again, so I went to visit my mom – I froze when I heard strange noises coming from her bedroom.

My husband, Dan, was late from work again—no surprise there.

His job had consumed him over the past few months, and though I tried to be understanding, it was clear we were drifting apart.

After three years of marriage, I missed him, I missed us. That evening, I decided to surprise him with his favorite dinner, hoping to remind him that, despite everything, we still had something special.

While preparing everything, I noticed my phone was down to just 10% battery and remembered I had left my charger at my mom’s place. She lived just ten minutes away, so I decided to drive over, thinking I’d be back before Dan even noticed I was gone.

When I arrived, the house was quiet. I stepped inside and FROZE—Dan’s shoes were by the door. Then I turned pale as I heard noises coming from the bedroom.

I ran toward the bedroom, and when I opened the door, I saw Dan kneeling on the floor, holding a toolbox, with my mom sitting on the bed, laughing uncontrollably.

My heart, which had been pounding with fear and confusion, slowly started to calm down as I realized what was actually happening. Dan looked up at me, startled by my sudden entrance, and said, “Oh, hey! What are you doing here?”

I stood frozen for a moment, trying to process the scene. “What am I doing here? What are you doing here? And why didn’t you tell me?”

My mom, still chuckling, interjected, “He’s been fixing my bed frame, dear! I mentioned it was creaking last week, and Dan offered to help. I guess I should’ve told you.”

Dan stood up, wiping his hands on his pants. “I wanted to surprise you by getting something off your mom’s to-do list. I figured it was a small thing, and I didn’t want to bother you with it.”

I sighed, relief washing over me as the tension drained from my body. “You could’ve at least let me know. I thought…” I trailed off, feeling embarrassed for where my mind had gone.

Dan walked over and wrapped his arms around me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just thought this would be a nice thing to do, but maybe I should’ve communicated better.”

My mom chimed in with a playful grin, “Well, the bed frame isn’t creaking anymore, so I’d say Dan’s earned some brownie points tonight.”

We all laughed, the awkward tension finally breaking. I realized how much I had let my fears and insecurities build up in my mind. Dan’s late nights weren’t some grand betrayal—they were just a result of him trying to manage everything on his plate, including helping my mom.

That night, we went home, and I finished preparing his favorite dinner. Over the meal, we talked, laughed, and reconnected in a way we hadn’t in months. Sometimes, the scariest moments are the ones that remind you just how much you have to be grateful for.
