Europe Heatwave Turns Deadly — Tourist Dies in Spain as Wildfires Rage in Greece

A 34-year-old Dutch tourist tragically died from heatstroke while hiking in Mallorca, Spain, as Europe experiences an intense and dangerous heatwave. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, the man collapsed while trekking with companions along the popular Camí de Son Sales trail. Emergency services responded quickly and attempted to revive him, but unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful.

This incident occurred amid rising concerns over extreme temperatures sweeping across southern and western Europe. Forecasters have issued red alerts for several tourist destinations, warning that temperatures could reach or even exceed 40°C (104°F) in cities like RomeMadrid, and Paris over the weekend and into next week.

In Greece, the situation has become even more alarming. A large wildfire broke out south of Athens, fueled by scorching temperatures and strong winds. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of at least five communities, and residents have been urged to remain alert as the fire spreads rapidly through dry vegetation.

To contain the fire, Greece’s fire department deployed a major response team, including over 90 firefighters, supported by five helicopters and eight water-dropping aircraft. The country’s emergency services remain on high alert, as weather forecasts predict continued heat and wind over the coming days, conditions that significantly increase the risk of new fires igniting.

Stephen Dixon, a spokesperson for the UK’s Met Office, confirmed that a severe heatwave is currently affecting large parts of southern and western Europe, and it is expected to expand into southeastern regions as well. He warned that such extreme weather conditions could lead to health emergencies, wildfires, and disruptions in infrastructure and travel.

Experts and public health officials are urging tourists and residents alike to take precautions—stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and follow local safety instructions. The extreme weather has already claimed lives, and authorities are concerned the death toll could rise if the heat persists.
