Two-day-old boy killed after getting circumcised without anesthetic, doctor charged

The loss of a two-day-old baby after a routine circumcision has left a family shattered and a community horrified. Prosecutors allege that Dr. Hong-An Jan administered a powerful narcotic instead of a local anesthetic, then failed to act when the infant showed classic signs of drug toxicity: profound lethargy, poor feeding, and alarming unresponsiveness. According to the civil lawsuit, the parents returned to the clinic desperate for reassurance, only to be told their baby’s symptoms were “normal” and sent home without tests, monitoring, or urgent care.

By the next day, their son had stopped breathing. Hospital staff could not revive him. An autopsy later linked his bronchopneumonia to drug intoxication, a detective calling the death “negligent and preventable.” Now, Dr. Jan faces an involuntary manslaughter charge and a suspended license, while the grieving parents pursue a wrongful death and malpractice suit, seeking answers — and a measure of justice for their little boy.
