The crash happened around 2 p.m. local time on March 20 at an intersection in Lowndes County, Ga., according to a news release from the Georgia State Patrol obtained by KOLD.

State troopers said that the school bus was stopped at a stop sign when a Hyundai SUV approached the intersection and that the bus driver allegedly failed to yield while entering the road, resulting in the SUV hitting the driver’s side of the bus.

The couple, Sierra Johnson and Kasen Millwood of Florida, told KOLD that they were traveling separately that day and were heading to their home in Florida.

Johnson, who was involved in the crash, was pregnant. She said her “belly was on fire” immediately following the collision.

“I felt like I was dying. And I was just lying on the road and asked everybody who was near me to help me. And that I’m pregnant, and, like, please save my baby,” she recalled of the incident.

Johnson was transported to South Georgia Medical Center, where she received an emergency C-section. She said the baby’s heart rate dropped during the procedure and he did not survive.

The couple’s son was due on July 12.

Millwood said they “want justice, and we want answers for our baby boy and why his life had to come to such an abrupt end.”

PEOPLE reached out to the Georgia State Patrol and the Lowndes County School District for additional information on Sunday, March 29, but did not receive immediate responses.

A GoFundMe, created for the couple, has raised over $2,700 of the $9,000 goal. Per the description, Johnson was over 23 weeks pregnant at the time of the accident and suffered multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone and a punctured lung.

“Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Sierra and Kasen lost their precious baby, Mason,” the description said. “This tragedy has turned their world upside down. Sierra is now recovering from her injuries, both physical and emotional, while she and Kasen try to find a way forward without their beloved baby.”

“The pain of losing Mason is something no parent should ever have to endure, and the road to healing will be long and difficult,” the page continued.
