Alert: Giant asleep for over a thousand years is showing symptoms that… See more

In recent days, scientists in Mexico have been closely monitoring one of the country’s most famous natural giants: the volcano known as Popocatépetl. Often called “Don Goyo” by locals, this massive volcano has been active for thousands of years and remains one of the most carefully observed volcanoes in the Americas.

Specialists from the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) have reported an increase in volcanic activity, including small ash emissions, gas plumes, and occasional tremors beneath the volcano. These signals are common indicators that magma and gases are moving inside the volcanic system.

Although headlines sometimes describe Popocatépetl as a “sleeping giant,” scientists emphasize that the volcano is not newly awakening. In fact, it has experienced intermittent activity for decades, particularly since the 1990s. The current observations simply show that the volcano continues its normal cycle of activity, which includes periods of stronger gas emissions and ash release.

Authorities maintain constant surveillance using seismic instruments, cameras, and satellite monitoring. The official volcanic alert level remains under evaluation, and emergency protocols are in place for nearby communities if activity intensifies.

Popocatépetl rises more than 5,400 meters above sea level and is located between the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico State, not far from Mexico City. Because millions of people live within the broader region, authorities regularly update safety measures and advise residents to follow official guidance.

For now, experts stress that there is no immediate cause for alarm, but continued monitoring is essential. Volcanic systems can change over time, and early observation allows scientists to warn nearby communities if conditions evolve.

Natural giants like Popocatépetl remind us of the powerful geological forces that shape our planet—forces that scientists continue to study in order to better understand and reduce volcanic risks.
