New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill vowed Monday to sue the Trump administration if National Guard troops are deployed to the state.
Speaking at a Univision 41 town hall, Sherrill — a Navy veteran and federal prosecutor who represents New Jersey’s 11th District — said troops “should not be on the streets of our country” except in rare cases like insurrection. She argued they are not trained for policing and pledged to “immediately take [Trump] to court” if he attempted to send them to New Jersey.
Sherrill, a Democrat, is running against Republican Jack Ciattarelli to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy.
Since returning to office, Trump has threatened or deployed federal troops to several cities, citing crime concerns. Lawsuits have followed in places like Chicago and Portland, where judges have blocked or criticized the moves as unlawful overreach.
The administration insists the deployments are needed to combat violence, though critics warn they only escalate tensions.
