A hot air balloon ride in southern Brazil turned tragic on June 21 when a fire broke out mid-flight, killing at least eight people and injuring 13 others. The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, was flying over Praia Grande in Santa Catarina with 21 passengers when flames erupted inside the basket.

Pilot Tiago Luiz Lemos, who survived, said he tried to lower the balloon and urged passengers to jump. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to escape. But as the balloon became lighter, it rose again before losing lift and crashing, engulfed in flames.

Authorities believe a backup burner may have reignited and that strong winds during takeoff possibly caused a gas leak. Among the victims were two couples, a mother and daughter, a doctor, and a figure skater—three were found embracing. Eyewitnesses saw people fall from the sky, while emergency crews fought fire and leaking gas to rescue survivors.

Governor Jorginho Mello declared official mourning, and President Lula offered federal support.

The Civil Aviation Agency has launched a full investigation, with preliminary findings expected within 30 days. The operator has suspended all flights.

This is Brazil’s second deadly ballooning accident in recent weeks, raising concerns over safety regulations.
