Grandma runs over 1-year-old with lawnmower, killing child

A Michigan family is grieving an unthinkable loss after a 1-year-old girl was accidentally run over by her grandmother’s riding lawnmower, authorities confirmed.

Aurora Shepard, who had just celebrated her first birthday in March, died on the afternoon of June 29th after the tragic incident at her grandmother’s home in Woodstock Township.

On Sunday, June 29, first responders were called to a home on Herold Highway in Woodstock Township, Michigan, after reports that a 1-year-old girl had been struck by a riding lawnmower.

According to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in around 4:52 p.m. Deputies arrived to find Aurora Shepard with critical injuries, Detroit News reports.

Investigators say the child’s 52-year-old grandmother was mowing the lawn on a riding mower when the accident happened. She was unaware the child had joined her outside, authorities said.

Aurora was transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, despite emergency efforts, the baby girl was pronounced dead.

‘Unimaginable moment’
“A devastating tragedy took the life of a beautiful 1-year-old girl named Aurora,” writes Amanda Lindeman in a GoFundMe campaign organized to financially support the baby’s parents, Sam Shepard and Alyssa Lindeman.

The baby’s relative continues, “In a single, unimaginable moment, her family’s world changed forever. Now, they are left grieving the sudden loss of their baby girl while facing the emotional and financial weight of laying her to rest.”

Leading cause of limb loss
While this tragedy is deeply personal, it highlights a broader safety concern that experts have warned about for years.

Riding mowers, in particular, are often seen as routine household tools – but they carry significant risks, especially for toddlers who are small and easily hidden in blind spots.

According to Children’s Mercy, “lawn mower-related incidents are a leading cause of amputations in pediatric patients and the number one cause of major limb loss in children less than 10 years of age.”

Every year, more than 9,000 – as many as 17,000 – children in the United States are injured by lawn mowers, and about 75 result in fatalities – like Aurora.

Catastrophic consequences
In addition, “the physical consequences of these injuries can be lifelong for the injured child, and the psychological consequences potentially catastrophic for the person (usually a relative) who was operating the mower when the injury occurred.”

Children’s Mercy advises that young children should be kept indoors or at a safe distance when power mowers are in use. Even brief lapses in supervision can lead to devastating outcomes, especially when a child moves quickly and unexpectedly.

Aurora’s tragic incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of just how quickly accidents can happen, even in familiar environments.

Unparalleled heartbreak
Her family now faces an unimaginable loss – one no parent or loved one should ever endure. In public tributes, her mother and father have shared their heartbreak and their love for a daughter who made every day brighter.

“No parent should ever have to experience this kind of heartbreak,” Lindeman writes on the GoFundMe page that has so far raised $10,051 of its $10,000 goal.

At the moment, no charges have been announced. officials say the incident appears to be a tragic accident and remains under investigation.
