Trump Announces Ceasefire After U.S. Bombs Iranian Nuclear Sites
Following U.S. strikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend, President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, calling it the end of the “12-day war.” He claimed on social media that both sides had agreed to a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” although neither country immediately confirmed the deal or its terms.
Trump stated the phased truce would start at midnight Washington time, with Iran observing it first, followed by Israel 12 hours later. He described it as a conflict that “could have gone on for years” but now “never will.”
Vice President JD Vance called the strikes and resulting ceasefire a “reset moment” for the region, warning Iran against future attempts to build nuclear weapons.
The announcement came after Iran fired 14 missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar, with Trump saying 13 were intercepted and one posed no threat. Trump thanked Iran for giving early notice, allowing for no casualties or damage. He expressed hope the situation would now lead to peace.
The U.S. bombing of Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites aimed to cripple Iran’s enrichment capabilities, though the long-term impact is uncertain. Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Iran’s limited response suggests significant damage and a desire to avoid escalation.
Iran’s parliament also voted to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route, pending approval from its national security council. However, analysts doubt Iran will follow through due to potential backlash from major oil buyers like China.
Despite rising tensions, oil prices stabilized, and Trump urged allies to increase oil production to keep prices low.
